Sarada Vilas: a Call to its Alumni

Sarada Vilas institutions, synonym for education in Mysore, is in need of resources to implement their ‘Vision Plan’. The plan and the current status of Sarada Vilas educational institutions are detailed in an appeal by the management to the Sarada Vilas alumni. We got to know of this from U B Vasudev, a non-resident Mysorean from Florida. Here is an alumnus whose ‘feel’ for his old school has stood the test of time. In his e-mail Vasudev refers, with affection and regard, to Sri NSS, ‘one of our great teachers’, and his friend R S Mohan Murthy, SVEI governing council member.

Sarada Vilas institution, founded in 1861 and still growing, was started as a Sanskrit patashala at a temple. by Sri Bhakshi Narasappa, with the patronage of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. It was M Venkatakrishnaiah, widely known as ‘Tataiah’, who, taking over management on the demise of the founder, started the Sarada Vilas Boys’ High School in 1919. Writing about Sarada Vilas, its history and growing profile for the benefit of Mysoreans amounts to a clergyman preaching to the church choir.

Old Mysore residents have grown with Sarada Vilas, and every other person born and brought up in this town goes through one of the Sarada Vilas institutions. SVHS alumni are spread the world over, and Vasudev, on a recent holiday with friends in Canada, writes, “we love talking about our school and the teachers we have had”. The strength of an institution is its alumni. The IITs, BITS, the Lawrence of Lovedale, and countless other institutions can always count on the old students’ network for support.

My own old school, DTEA in New Delhi, has a network of old students associations, spread over many parts of India and abroad. Besides city-specific old student meets and annual mega socials, the DTEA alumni executive and the School’s management are in touch on a regular basis. Lawrence School factors in the alumni while drawing up programmes for its Founders’ Day celebrations that are spread over two or more days. Old students, and, even their parents, visiting Ooty drop in at the school for a look-see. Apart from the Lawrence school website, which is a reference source for old students, a core group of old students keep themselves in e-mail touch through an interactive e-group.

The Sarada Vilas ‘Vision Plan’ envisages changes in the pattern of education and specialized course to meet changing needs of time. That education standards need to be raised can hardly be stressed. Innovative methods of teaching and a measure of high-tech educational infrastructure would be needed. This is where a school alumni can help not merely with material support but also with their guidance, insight and expertise. No ‘vision plan’ for schools can ignore the role of  information and communication technology. I would like to refer you to two items posted elsewhere on this website – 1) Planning Hi-tech School Buildings (under the heading Drafting Mysore Master Plan in  ‘Issues & Ideas’) and 2 ) Teacher-blogs for Students ( Issues & Ideas).

Batchmate Sundaresan

Recalling my days at SVHS (1948-1951), I remember many popular teachers, brilliant students. But one amongst them stands out in my memory - K. Sundaresan. During the three years he studied there, I do not recall any body else having surpassed him in any subject. In the SSLC examination he stood first in the state. The record he set stood unbroken till the system of examinations was changed many years later. While in SVHS, Sundaresan undertook study of Hindi in a private school. He stood first in South India in "Rashtrabhasha" examination. Two years later Sundaresan stood first for the state in intermediate examination, again creating a record. Sundaresan was an excellent debator, a good public speaker and a long distance runner.

My grand father E Ramaswamy Iyer an engineer, Ayodhya. Kantharajaurs Road was incharge of the construction of the SV school and he donated his fee by constructing the last class room in the old school. His photo was in the Library. We ars six brothers and we all studied here from 1932 to 1961.Ramakrishna, Ramanath, Ramasami, Ramachandran, Ramakumar and Ramaprasad. Thanks to the untiring efforts and sacrifice of the staff that most of the students of the old school are well settled in life. For example My uncle Dr R Nagendran FRCS and Sr. KV Narayan did their BSc together and one took to medicine to become a leading surgeon and the other a Great teacher! The sacrifice by the staff of the school to educate the students by taking up teaching is unparaleled. Most of the old students will rember the teachers. But we had one Appaji an assistant in the science dept, who knew everything in science!
Long live this tribe of dedicated staff if this school!

Well, I am running out of words even thinking about Sarada Vilas. I did my Pre university and My BSc there. I have seen one of the best Teachers ever, while I was there. Though I was not an excellent student, They always encouraged me in all aspects. It is really hard to pick my favourite. I have seen myself growing up, mentally and  Phylosophycally at Saradavilas. I can never forget the lab assistants and the librarians, who were so cooperative. I will always be in debth to all my Professors and everyone out there in Saradavilas. I would be needing their blessings all my life. "GURU BRAMHA GURU VISHNU, GURU DEVO MAHESHWARAHA, GURU SAAKSHAATH PARABRAMHA, TASMAI SHRI GURAVENNAMAHA"

I stumbled on this website by accident and was pleasantly surprised to find a posting from Dr. V. Ramaprasad whom I knew from my days as a student at the Sharada Vilas High School.  Dr. Ramaprasad was a few years my senior, however, his younger brother, V. Ramanathan, was my classmate.  I am sure that Dr. Ramaprasad had the same set of dedicated teachers that I had - Professors M. S. Ramaswamy (Head Master), K. V. Narayan (Chemistry), B. R. Ramanna (Physics), B. S. Suryanarayana Rao (English), M. L. N. Sastry (Composition), B. Ramasheshan (Mathematics) and others.  These exemplary teachers left an indelible impression on every student that had the good fortune to study under them.  There was of course Appaji, the versatile lab attender, who demonstrated class-room experiments in Chemistry and Physics.  Mysore was a small city in those good old days with a population of about 150,000 (1.5 lakhs).  Life was simple and unhurried in contrast to the present day hustle and bustle.  It is my recollection that people were more civilized and respected a different set of values; a set of values that was unique to old Mysore.  I shall be happy to hear from anyone who knew me in those days; my Email address is umakuppu@rogers.com.

Me too stumbles upon this and must admit could not resist from paying my respects to Shri C.V.Ramachadra Rao, who used to teach English at the High School. He did have a great influence on me.

Then one can reel out a list of stalwarts like KRK, MCC, SK, etc. amongst the elders and HBG, SZU and many others amongst the younger teachers.

Indeed a memorable 5 years ( 3 at High School and 2 at PUC College).

My pranaams to you all, Sirs. You not only taught but inculcated values that we cherish so much.

GREETINGS to all alumni

I totally recall my days at Sarada Vilas High School between 1962-1964.I do not  know for sure in which section Dr.Ramprasad was inducted .Mine was X"F" in final year. Yes, we had clasmate such as GOPI who was a attarctive young boy who used to be a hero in Kabbadi before the school joined for morning prayer. With ease he used to put down GUNDA a clan from Premier Studio who at that time came in JAWA!I had still very close rmemberances with KN who was our head master. Then came CR.We had NR for English,SK for science,KRK for Math,Ganapthi Bhatta fo Hindi,Chokkanna for science again and the list goes on.What a superb memorable days we had been. Each day was a thrill and of course challenge to succeed.I have many friends who are in touch here in USA and also in India particularly in Mysore.Just today I had the pleasure of a reference from Dr.K.Ravindra ,presently Prof.and Dean of Mechanical and Arospace Engg at St.Louis University,USA.

I could never forget a day without remembering those air of freshness, innocence.fear and challenge to face future. It is so overwhelming to thank technology to see the day we are.But for internet and other social Websites probably the world have continued to remain distant.I would welcome anyone who wants to respond and stay connected for past memories.I can be reached at balakrishna24@hotmail.com.

Again our continued thanks and appreciation goes to excllent teachers and elders we had in the past.Is it not a fact that such a fabric of culture, devotion, respect, love.bondage and empathy and acknowledgement is lacking in present day generation despite matarial excellence an comforts? A strong case for revival!A difficult task of course

I hope that it can be revived without having the mass copying in the 10th state board exams which used to be rampant under KRK as head master.

I cannot say much for the teaching of the subjects here (I mean the 1980 to 1995 period) - you were supposed to mug up all the theorems and lesser said about social studies, the better. The Science teaching was slightly better. I should mention tht Samskritam teaching by SPB was par excellence -  great exception to the mediocrity of the school.

The great thing about the school was the fantastic spirit of the students in spite of the crazy teachers. I know of several Ph.D. s in my batch including people who have become international academic and research leaders.
