Making Mysore hoardings-free is a tall order. Regulating their settings, location and size is however quite another matter. The city mayor Dakshinamurthy has involved in this task a representative committee of public-spirited individuals, including the Mysore Agenda Task Force (MATF - R Guru), Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP- Dr N Ramesh), Indian National Trust for Art and Culture (INTAC- Krishna Vattam), the Heritage Committee( S G Vombatkere) and the media interests( Rajshekar Koti and Amshi Prasanna Kumar).

Apart from evolving guidelines in respect of the conventional hoardings, one wonders if the representative committee has articulated its thoughts on other forms of adverts such as the skyline-impacting neon-signs, the sponsor's adverts on public signboard, roadside parks and roundabouts, and the bus-shelter advertisements (as done by 'Hutch' covering the entire bus-stand on JLB Road.

This representative group could be accorded the status of a standing committee for a periodical review of the guideline's observance and violations. And there is case for making the standing committee more inclusive, by co-opting representatives from advertisement agencies, their clients and the federation of mohalla residents associations, if there is such an umbrella body.

The city mayor's well-intentioned move to involve a representative group of public-spirited individuals in drafting guidelines on putting up hoardings in the city hasn't found favour with some elected members of the city corporation.
This was tantamount to breach of privilege of the House, as a corporator chose to put it. (The Hindu March 19, 2005)
