IISc. Campus in Mysore ?

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is considering plans to develop a Mysore campus. A high-level delegation is to hold talks (Nov.24) with the University of Mysore, according to vice-chancellor J Shashidar Prasad. A positive outcome in this exercise would make it conducive for at least two international research agencies to make up their minds on locating their Asia centre in Mysore.

They are: 1) International Centre for Theoretical Physics, UNESCO funded agency managed in collaboration with the government of Italy and International Atomic Energy Association.. 2) Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, set up to foster advanced studies in physics and maths in the developing world

Mysoreans recall that IISc., Bangalore, came up on the 350 acres of prime land  granted by Nalwudi Krishnaraja Wadaiyar, on recommendation by Dewan Seshadri Iyer. Their fond hope is that IISc would reciprocate the gesture by locating their proposed campus in Mysore; and help the city develop into a centre of higher learning.

Other than currently working scientists in IISc and people with houses to rent in Mysore, and any US corporate sponsors of research, nobody else would care whether they open a campus in Mysore or not.

Great news indeed.  Mysore will flourish even more with higher seats of learning, research, arts and even sports.  Mysoreans should get rid of any xenophobic thoughts and welcome people of all races, color and nationalities so it too will become a melting pot even greater than the greatest city of the world New York.  IISc coming to Mysore is a dream come true.  Good for you Mysoreans, go for it.  The best is yet to come.

I do not agree that a IISc campus will benefit a few only.

Mysore is a well reputed academic and research centre. A number of academic institutions and research labs have added feathers to the cap of Mysore as a major academic and research centre. In fact, some of the retired scientists are carrying on work in Mysore even now. Mysore should further grow in these areas  and not as a congested industrial city throwing up new civic issues, destroying its beauty, environment and culture, who has already received a dent.

Therefore, setting up of the prestigious IISc campus in the Mysore University is most welcome. This will not only add further to the image of the city, but also help furtherance of research. However, this should become a reality soon.

One must know Amul Baby food came from the CFTRI and the much-needed packaged and dehydrated foods for Indian defence personnel from the DFRL. Prof. Chandrasekhar, who later rose to an important position at the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, did some pioneering research in the Mysore University Physics Department. More can follow.

Let us not be Deve Gowdas! Let us try to draw inspiration from the great Sir MV!

It takes all sorts to make a world, doesn't it ? It includes those who reckon two and two make three. It may well be your considered view that two and two make four, or even five, if you take the synergy into account. But in a democracy we express varied opinions.
