BSNL vs Other Private Basic Telephone Operators

BSNL, which earlier was known P&T, in those good old days, when we used to subscribe for a telephone connection, we were asked to deposit the money and probably after two months we used to get the phone connection along with the a phone instrument and a telephone directory. If we needed to know any number, we could call  the Directory assistance.

P&T was made BSNL and came a whole lot of additional facilities like 1600 toll free numbers, electronic EPABX systems, etc.,

The present scenario is in such shambles, though there is a regulatory body governing the telephone operators in the country. I am not sure why the authority hasn't insisted the private operators to accomodate the 197 and toll free numbers 1600 from their phones. I am at present using a BSNL line and as well as a Airtel number. But when I want to access any of the toll free numbers or enquire about the any of the help lines provided by BSNL. I fall back on the a BSNL phoneline.

I think the TRAI should insist the private operators to provide this facility and also insist that the private operators publish a telephone directory.

Even till this date, any BSNL subcriber can avail a telephone directory every year, unlike the private operators. They don't seem to have this rule applicable to them.

Even the rentals from BSNL phones are bimonthly as against monthly billing from the Private operators..The deposits are the same, the pricing is also the same but why cant the facilities be the same?

Some food for thought!!
