The Tata's project at Singur, West Bengal to produce "People's car" has meant that many poor peasants will loose their fertile agricultural lands. While close to 1,000 farmers and a large but undetermined number of landless agricultural labourers, along with a subsidising state, are bearing the enormous cost of establishing Tatas’ automobile unit, the distribution of the benefits among them will most certainly be disproportionately low. Who are the beneficiaries of such a costly project? The project affected families? Certainly not. No need to highlight the impact across the country of Rs. 100,000 car on the environment, roads, pressure on imported petroleum products etc. Shall this be an example of the developmental model we need for our society? An incisive commentary on such a developmental model is given in the article in link below:
This narration though refers to a distant place in West Bengal, the issues nevertheless are relevant to the prospects closer home, where SEZs are being contemplated.

RE: "People's car" and the people
Very well highlighted, Mr. Sharma. In our country, development means, more often, - creating good life for a few at the expense of a majority of people, who are :
1. Poor to very poor. 2. Uneducated, and do not have equal opportunity.3.Do not have influence or 'pull'. 4. Neglected by society as they are supposed to be paying their 'poorva janmada prayschittha'. 4.Are hounded by police as they cannot earn to do a living even as vendors. 5. Neglected by hospitals, temples etc where the rich are given prefernce for treatment, special darshan etc.5. If they are farmers and committing suicide, they become only 'statistics' without a solution in sight.
With such a grim reality where is the hope for the downtrodden who only seem to be tread down and down.... year after year.....
