Dumping Animal Waste in Cauvery

The Mysore Agenda Task Force (MATF) has detected that animal waste of slaughtered animals is dumped into Cauvery near Siddapura, some 60 km from KRS reservoir. MATF member M Lashmana, who has a videotape showing floating bones and other waste litter on the river bank, shared the story with the media (April 5, 2005).

His Findings: About 800-1000 kag of waste, stuffed in gunny bags and tied to large stones, is sunk into the river.

This is done thrice a week and it has ben going on for years, reckons Mr Lakshmana, citing the locals at Siddapura and surrounding areas.

The Cauvery, for those who don't know, is a drinking water source for Mysore, Mandya and Bangalore.

Sources in Karnataka State Pollution Control Board dub MATF findings as exaggerated ('The Hindu')

Surely, they can do better than this. For a start, an identifiable spokesman of the pollution control board can come up with a statement, in unambiguous terms.

The police, on their part, ought to probe this affair, to identify those responsble for dumping animal waste.

It has been going on for a while, says MATF. While commending its initiative, I, for one, would wish the MATF findings are proved wrong on this issue.

Findings of MATF are correct. Unfortunately tributaries and misuse of  Cauvery has started long back and no corrective action except reading reports. Actions are always lack of power and political will leads to impasse in the system. We don't have a proper organized forum whose views are considered for implementing the corrective actions. River Cauvery is heading for a dooms day and it is no wonder after some years the waters of Cauvery will never be potable with the current level of dumping. Can all of us join and do some thing. We see lot of ideas on the "net" but net results are very minimum
