Landslips on Chamundi Hills

A 30-ft. stretch of the hill road to Nandi statue has crumbled on the edges, and landslips on five other spots have been reported. The last such landslip on this scale occurred in 1994. Apparently, we haven’t learnt eco-lessons from it. Environmental concerns expressed earlier have been ignored. Mr U N Ravikumar of NIE’s centre for appropriate rural technology has reiterated the need to declare a ‘buffer zone’ and a freeze on construction work. The buffer zone would include a 300-metre core conservation area for full-blown forestry all around Chamundi Hills, and a farther 200-metre stretch of foothills where only farming and horticulture should be permitted.
