Transparency in administration is imperative, more so when the Right to Information Act has come into force. Those concerned should start making use of this vital Act, a precious weapon now in their hands, and find out why the MCC (the Commissioner and the Corporators), is in a great hurry to take up demolition and plan multi-crore schemes, without enlightening the public on the details, including fund-availability and management. This applies to Devaraj Market proposal too. Instead of demolishing and creating more congestion and traffic problem by putting up a multi-storey structure, why not build new and spacious markets in extensions like JL Puram, Kuvempunagar etc. One more point, when malls and marts are opening their retail shops in localities, will there be a need for one more huge Corporation market in the heart of the city? Is planning not about dispersal of traffic, business and industry? This is what the Maharajas did by building extensions and roads for each purpose outside their old fort. These and similar issues should be taken up as a movement, under a common public forum.
