Watching a pizza commercial, I got the idea that our maddur vada could do with a celebrity endorsement. Paresh Ravel, my favourite actor, is seen taking a big bite of pizza and then muttering through a mouthful, 'Hungry, kya'. It was a class act. I shared my idea with a friend, who visualised Mandya Ramesh endorsing the maddur vada. The snag was that the product was already more widely known than the celebrity. Ambrish was another name that popped up. He is a popular Kannada cinema figure who has turned a politician. But admen prefer a sportsman, preferably a cricketer. The idea is to promote maddur vada globally. Rahul Dravid could be our best bet!... Read on at Recycled Writings
Mr.GVK's assimilation of MV (not to be mistaken for its as widely appreciated namesake, who had the "Sir" prefix) seems complete. As complete as Mysore's internalisation of GVK. MV is making him go bonkers. This moment, I visualise him in one of those South Indian eateries in California, sitting before a plateful of MVs! (Or, has he come back?)
Ambarish may not be the best role model for a gourmet. It is difficult to imagine him biting into the MV with one hand, without holding in the other the lubricant to push it down. Moreover, those watching him assault the crispy might mistake that it is the oily MV which has added to his girth, forgetting that the culprit is what is in his other hand. That may limit the scope of MV as a short-eat to go with one's drink.
California has yet to import it - Maddur Vada (not to be confused with the other MV - masale-vada). They have Chinese, Italian, Sushi, Thai, Labanese food joints, not to mention our own Udipi, Woodlands, Sharavanaa, Bhima; a host of other our northie food joints. But not an outlet to raise the Mysore-Maddur culinary flag. A point to be noted by our Gayatri Tiffin Room, Mahesh Prasad, Ramyas and other home-grown Mysore eatery establishments. Isn't it time they too had their finger in the Calif. pie ?
Only one problem with your suggestion Mr. GVK. GTR, Mahesh Prasad, Ramya, none of them make good maddur vada. The taste of the Maddur vada from the road side/train side near Maddur is not replicated easily in Mysore or elsewhere. Maybe it is a special secret recipe'. Something close can be managed by the ones you have mentioned perhaps, but not quite. Anyway, for North American based Mysoreans/Indians, perhaps any Maddur vada is better than none!
